About Me

Dr Sam Galhenage Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist in Perth

I am a locally trained gastroenterologist and hepatologist, practising in both public and private hospitals in Perth for over 10 years.

I completed 6 years of medical training at the University of Western Australia, followed by residency and basic physician training at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

I then completed 2 years of Advanced Training in Gastroenterology at the 3 major tertiary hospitals in Perth (Royal Perth Hospital, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Fremantle Hospital) followed by a third year of training at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney.

My final training was conducted at the prestigious Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, USA where I completed an 18 month Fellowship in Hepatology, with a focus on Viral Hepatitis.

Following my return to Perth, I have practised at various locations as a Consultant Gastroenterologist, including public appointments at Fremantle, Armadale and Kaleeya Hospitals. Since its inception in February 2015, I have taken on the role of Head of Liver Service at Fiona Stanley Hospital. My posting here enables access to the latest pharmaceutical agents and diagnostic and interventional technologies in gastroenterology. I also provide clinical services to the WA Liver Transplant Service at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, where I am a member of the Liver Transplant panel.

I currently undertake private practice at 2 locations – South Perth Hospital and St John of God Hospital Murdoch (Wexford Medical Centre). In private practice I maintain a strong clinical interest in general gastroenterology and endoscopy, including bowel cancer screening, iron deficiency, coeliac disease, functional bowel conditions and inflammatory bowel disease. In the public setting I have a special interest in viral hepatitis and advanced liver disease. I have conducted numerous clinical trials for treatment of hepatitis C, hepatitis B, fatty liver (NAFLD) and autoimmune liver disease and am actively involved in clinical translational research and training of junior doctors.  Following our enrollment in numerous Hepatitis C trials, the Liver Unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital has led the way in providing a cure for patients infected with hepatitis C, with the new treatments available on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) since 2016.
